Sustainable Biowaste/Biomass Utilization to derive Bioenergy and Bioresources: Opportunities and Challenges

Biowaste and biomass are sustainable sources that originate in a vast amount from municipal solid waste and agro-industrial waste. World Bank predicted global waste generation to increase up to 3,401 million metric tons in 2050. In recent years, there have been significant advances in biological waste treatment, however, biowaste/biomass utilization still lacks efficient energy conversion technologies. The concepts of biorefinery and circular economy of biowaste and biomass include some technologies such as advanced pre-treatment technologies, production of high-value biochemicals, functionalized biochar via pyrolysis, biofertilizer from waste composting.

This special issue (SI) entitled “Biowaste/Biomass Utilization of Biowaste/Biomass to derive Drive Bioenergy and Bioresources: Opportunities and Challenges” has been conceptualized to high-points some of the advances in the field. We are especially interested in the high-quality contributory research papers and critical reviews on the following topics dealing with the recovery of biofuels, bioresources, and management of solid and liquid wastes.

This special issue aims to capture the latest scientific and technological developments in the following area:

Biowaste/biomass characterization and energy efficiency analysis
Different techniques and pre-treatment approaches to manage solid waste
Aerobic and anaerobic biodegradation of biowaste/biomass
Waste/biomass conversion to clean energy
The impact of waste to energy conversion on the environment
Challenges in energy transformation from biowaste and biomass
Nutrient recovery from waste by innovative technologies
Sustainable and cost-effective biowaste operations and models
Techno-economic analysis of biowaste conversion to biofuels
Computational techniques to improve modeling and simulation of renewable energy systems

Contributory authors are invited to submit the research and review articles. While selecting the article type during the online submission, authors should choose “SI: SBU”.
